Early on Cecil was drawn to the fascinating qualities of R. yakushimanum (more precisely, R. degronianum ssp. yakushimanum var. yakushimanum). Its compact growth, beautiful indumentum and elegant flowers caused a sensation when first seen at flower shows. Cecil used the selected form R. 'Koichiro Wada´ in two of his most successful crosses, R. ’Noyo Brave’ and R. ’Cinnamon Bear’ which are flourishing in the garden to this day. Several more of his registered hybrids, including Rh. ’Pure Pleasure’, ’Belva's Joy’, ’Eleanor Moody’ and ’Vickie Diane’, have been added to the garden. Two of Cecil's crosses, Rh. ’Blazing Crown’ and ’Herb's Choice’, have recently been registered.

When the garden was acquired, the inventory of rhododendrons was seven hundred and seventy seven. Many were in severely overcrowded situations and had suffered from recent severe cold weather. As a consequence the year 2000 inventory declined to the present five hundred and twenty-six. Even then, in order to accommodate the plants with sufficient space, many had to be moved and several new beds added to the garden. The rhododendrons are all tagged and mapped.
