Portland Chapter ARS – General Information

General Meeting Information

Portland ARS chapter meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month, September through May.

Meetings are held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 4033 SE Woodstock Blvd, Portland, Oregon. The location is one-half mile east of Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden.

Meetings begin with an informal social half-hour starting at 7:00 PM. There is short business meeting at 7:30 PM, followed by our featured presentation.

Programs for the 2009 – 2010 season

September 17, 2009 Presentation by Peter Kendall
Chapter member Peter Kendall will present the fascinating plant hunting expeditions of Peter Cox and Peter Hutchinson, as told in their book "Seeds of Adventure".
 
October 15, 2009 Presentation by Zack Perry from Reed College
Mr. Perry will speak to us about refurbishing the Crystal Spring Watershed. He has worked to restore Reed Canyon, propagating his native plants for that project. Now he'll show us how he does it.
This is also our chapter's annual cutting exchange
Kathy Van Veen will show us how she grows roots on just about anything. Please bring any cuttings you'd like to share, and also bring anything special you'd like to start - with Kathy's blessing it will propagate.

November 19, 2009 Presentation by Ed McVickers of the Japanese Garden and by our own chapter's Bill Robinson
Mr. Robinson was instrumental to the Japanese Garden in it's early years. Together with Mr. McVickers' narration, he presents many slides from his vast collection.
This is also our chapter's annual species auction

December 17, 2009 Chapter Christmas Party
Members traditionally share 5-10 slides or images of their favorite subjects at our annual Christmas celebration. They also share their favorite dishes for a potluck dinner.

January 21, 2010 Presentation by Mike and Maria Stewart:
Mike and Maria acquainted us with a variety of eastern azalea species, many of which they grow at Dover Nursery. Their knowledge of eastern azaleas was recently enhanced by a trip to Tennessee and North Carolina, an experience they shared with us.
Educational Program:
Dick Cavender taught us how to battle moles in our gardens.

February 18, 2010 Presentation by Kristi O'Donnell of Meerkerk Rhododendron Gardens:
She revealed exciting improvements at Meerkerk Gardens, including their volunteerism programs and educational programs for children. Kristi bolstered her inspirational talk with fascinating and beautiful slides of the garden.
