The Early Show is always held at the Exhibition Hall at Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden on the first Saturday in April. The Early show is a weather-dependent exhibition. This year was not exception. Nice, warm weather (in the mid-70's in the week before the show) brought a lot of rhododendrons into flower. Then, in the week before the show, cold weather came back. Several days before the show temperatures in many yards in the region dropped to 27 degrees F. The few days left before showtime were not enough to bring these rhodies back to a flowering state .
The above flowers were a few of the entries to the show. The distance across the flowers is about 3/8 of an inch.

Judges and results recorders always have fun at the show. Arguments about which entry is best may get heated but never angry. The best entry (almost) always wins out. In the end EVERYBODY is a winner |

Sometimes trying to evaluate an entry can be a real head scratcher | ![]() |
The morning of the show was constantly interrupted by rain showers passing through the garden. In between the water events it was very worthwhile to go and enjoy the display of rhododendrons in the garden

Loderi Venus (in pink) and R. maccabeanum were both in full bloom in the garden | ![]() |

Shorter people will have to stand on tiptoes to reach the blossoms on Loderi King George, a tree that reaches 30 ft high. Later the blossoms will carpet the ground beneath the rhody. |

There is always someting in bloom somewhere You turn around and look back at where you came from and everything looks different |

The Fern Wall, on the left, is now a finished project. Some ferns are starting to come out but it is still too cool for a full fledged fernery display - the maple tree is trying though |
