2006 EARLY BLOOMER
RHODODENDRON SHOW
and PLANT SALE

This year the show is was held from noon to 5 PM on the First Saturday, April 1, 2006 in the exhibition hall (the Cool House) at Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden.

The Early Show is always the most interesting of the rhododendron shows in the region. It doesn't always have the most entries or varieties, in fact it rarely does. There is a reason for this.

What blooms at the at the begining of April is very dependent on on what the weather has been. We have a totally different group of plants in bloom after a warm Spring than what we see after a cool, wet Spring. Some years, such as in 1997 when we experienced a late frost of 27 degrees fahrenheit on the morning of the show, all our favorite blossoms turn to brown mush.

The 2006 Early Show was marked by very few azaleas, almost no R. augustinii entries, and only one R. schlippenbachii. Much of what was entered is usually no longer in bloom this "late" in the season. Instead, there were more R. reticulatum and R. lutescens, plants that are usually about bloomed out by this time.

The names of the trophy winners are to be found in the gallery that follows the list of ribbon winners. The picture gallery from the day of the show at the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden includes both the show and the garden.

Pictures from April 1 2006 at CSRG

02_early06
The first part of any show is to
make sure that all plants are in
the right categories
01_early06
Then the judges decide which
entry in each category is best
03_early06
Sometimes that can be a real
difficult decision, as with
these vireyas

The novice trophy went unclaimed
again this year. We're looking for a few good newcomers.

Most points in show went to
D & C Cavender

10_early06
Some of the old rhododendrons
at CSRG grow up very warped.
11_early06
Not all of the Spring color is provided by
rhododendrons. New growth on maples,
willows, and flowering trees provide
refreshing variety
12_early06
Some of the larger rhodies are starting to bloom on the edge of the lake

13_early06
Rain showers alternated with periods of sunchine
14_early06
Low white clouds scudding across the Crystal Springs Lake
15_early06
None of the rhodies have grown as tall as the cherry trees - yet.

16_early06
By the time that the Mother's Day Show comes, the crowds enjoying the garden will obscure this view
17_early06
There is at least one pair of blue herons at the garden this year
18_early06
They are quite used to people by now, but they still won't let you get too close
